How to Use the Ruler Tool in Figma

There are two types of people in this world: those who use the Ruler Tool and those who don’t. It is very common to see rulers in any design software such as Photoshop and Illustrator. In this tutorial, you will learn about How to Use the Ruler Tool and how to properly use it in Figma.

For the Ones that Want to Use the Ruler Tool

The Ruler’s function is basically to add visual guides to your Canvas or Frame. You can use these horizontal and vertical guidelines to position your designs. Eyyy but, isn’t the Layout Grid Tool the same? You may ask. Unlike the Layout Grid Tool, the Ruler guides provide more accuracy when it comes to customizing the grid and you can also manipulate it faster.

To activate the Ruler Tool follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to the top toolbar and press the Figma Icon.
  2. At the dropdown, press the View option and then press the Ruler Tool

So, If you enjoy going wild with guides, you came to the right place. After activating the Ruler Tool you can create guides by simply clicking at the top/left bar and dragging the line to the Frame. Vertical guides are blue, horizontal guides are red.

The Ruler Tool will come in handy if you have a very specific design pattern. Maybe let’s say you choose to snap it, or you just wanted to add margins without activating the grid, this feature then can be used as an additional feature alongside the margins and it will help you with future references to your design.

For the Ones that Don’t

Eeeey, what if I don’t want to use the Ruler Tool? Chill, we suggest then check out the tutorial on What is the Layout Grid Tool and explore which tool suits you best. For now, have fun using Figma.
